Offsite organisers

How many books do we need for a leadership offsite, and what do we do with them?

One copy per person attending, plus a few extras. And the question of what you do with them matters more than the number. Books that get distributed at an offsite and then sit in people’s bags, half-read, are a waste of the investment. Books that become the basis for a structured conversation produce genuine value. The difference is entirely in how the session is designed.

Plan the book session before you order the books

Work out how you’ll use the book at the offsite first. Will you do a discussion session using prepared questions? A facilitated reflection exercise? A commitment round where managers name one thing they’ll change? Once you know that, the number of books and the logistics around them become simple.

Give people the book before the event

Reading a book and then discussing it the same day rarely produces good discussion. Send the books in advance with three or four focused questions to consider while reading. People arrive with perspectives. The conversation starts at a different level.

Leave them with a way to keep using it

The most valuable thing you can do after distributing books at an offsite is give people a reason to come back to them. A follow-up session four to six weeks later, focused on what changed, is worth more than the original discussion. It also signals that the investment was about behaviour change, not the event itself.

A question to take away
At your last leadership offsite, what was the mechanism that connected the content to something that actually changed in how your managers led their teams?
